Without a doubt, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the most famous book in the world. In this novel, a young orphaned boy with an abusive aunt and uncle goes to live in London with his only living relative. He discovers he’s a wizard after being attacked by an evil dark wizard intent on killing him for his “unique” powers. From there, Harry, along with friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger embark on a journey of discovery through magical lands to find out about their parents' pasts—and ultimately bring down the dark wizard who tried to kill them before turning into Lord Voldemort. With the success of the novels, both Rowling and her books were becoming more and more popular. Warner Brothers saw this as an opportunity to bring Harry Potter to the big screen. They approached Chris Columbus to direct what would become Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (otherwise known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in American territories). At first Rowling was hesitant about this idea, because she felt that it was not right to go around making films off her books until she finished writing her series. She even mentioned that she wouldn’t have accepted any money for the rights. However, Warner Brothers wouldn’t take no for an answer. The studio offered Columbus a huge sum of money to direct the film. He accepted the offer immediately, and thankfully they were able to come to an agreement with Rowling in terms of getting paid for the rights. Ultimately Rowling was very pleased with Columbus’ work on the Harry Potter movie, she said “I do understand why my American publishers wanted me to write an introduction for this book when it was published there, because Chris Columbus did a brilliant job on the film of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone - he did everything that I hoped he would do". When it was announced that Columbus would direct the film, Warner Brothers already had in mind who they wanted to play the lead roles in the movie. They decided upon two actors to play Harry Potter and his best friend Ron Weasley. The first actor they chose to play Harry was an unknown young boy named Daniel Radcliffe. It’s surprising that no one in Hollywood knew of him before this movie, because his father was a very famous dramatic actor named Alan Radcliffe. The other young man chosen to play Ron Weasley was a talented young British comedian by the name of Rupert Grint. He was only eleven years old when the casting for this movie took place, but he eventually did a great job portraying Ron, who is described in the books as being very outspoken. After being cast into his roles for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, both Radcliffe and Grint continued to play heroes in future movies based on the series. Radcliffe played Harry Potter another three times; he also played Alan Turing in The Imitation Game (2014), Professor Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them (2016) and Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). cfa1e77820
